We’re talking about the infamous Clawitzer Fountain roadblock during the main storyline. Fear not, fellow researcher and adventurer! This guide will provide the depth and detail you need to freeze your way to the truth, rescue Gwynn, and continue your ascent in the Z-A Royale.

The Mission: Reaching Rank D and Finding Gwynn

Your pursuit of a higher research rank and your involvement with the city’s unfolding dramas will lead you to Main Mission 19: “Reaching Rank D.”

It’s during this mission that your objectives narrow down to locating the elusive Gwynn. After following a series of leads that take you from city hall to a local café, the trail finally runs cold… right up to a very conspicuous water feature.

Your mission log will eventually give you the critical instruction:

“Head to the courtyard that features a Clawitzer fountain to try to find Gwynn.”

Stage 1: Locating the Monumental Crustacean

Before you can solve the puzzle, you need to find its center.

The Location: The Clawitzer Fountain is situated in Bleu Sector 7, conveniently located right next to the Bleu Pokémon Center.

Lumiose is a vast, interconnected city, but Sector 7 is easily recognizable. Head to the Pokémon Center, and you’ll spot the large, striking fountain featuring the massive-clawed, Water-type Pokémon, Clawitzer, spouting water from its signature appendage.

Approach the fountain. A prompt will appear, giving you a curious option. Select it:

“I’d stop the water.”

Choosing this option confirms that the fountain is indeed your target, but how do you stop a torrent of water pouring from a statue’s powerful cannon?

Stage 2: The Ice-Type Solution

This is where your Pokémon team comes into play. Lumiose City’s secrets are often unlocked by strategically employing your Pokémon’s abilities. To stop a flow of water, you need an opposing force—specifically, a chilling one.

The Key: You must have a Pokémon in your party that knows the Ice-type move Ice Beam (or a similar, powerful Ice-type attack).

The game is explicit in this requirement: you need to Aim a Pokémon with the move Ice Beam at the fountain.

Depth Check: What if I don’t have Ice Beam?

For players who may not have a Pokémon that naturally learns this move, this becomes a minor quest in itself!

  1. Check Your Boxes: Scan your existing collection for Pokémon that can learn Ice Beam (Absol, Dragonair, or various Ice-types are common candidates).
  2. The TM Option: If you have the Technical Machine (TM) for Ice Beam, you can teach it to any compatible Pokémon. TMs have unlimited usage in Legends: Z-A, making this the most reliable solution. The TM for Ice Beam is often found in the icy Wild Zone sections of Lumiose or can be purchased once you progress far enough in the game.
  3. Go Catch One: If all else fails, venture into a Wild Zone known for Ice-type Pokémon, such as Wild Zone 12 (the temporary icy tundra), and catch a Pokémon like Snorunt, Bergmite, or a Vanillite evolution. Train it until it learns the requisite move, or use the TM.

Once you have your Ice-type ready, stand before the fountain and activate the move.

Stage 3: Draining the Way

The subsequent cutscene is the satisfying reward for your preparation:

Your chosen Pokémon will fire a magnificent Ice Beam at the fountain. The water will instantly freeze mid-flow, cracking the stone and ultimately causing the water to drain away, revealing a previously hidden entrance.

The once-decorative Clawitzer Fountain now serves as a gateway: the entrance to the sewers beneath Lumiose City!

Stage 4: Continue the Pursuit

With the path clear, you can now descend into the murky depths. This new area—the sewers—is a progression point in the mission. You’ll need to navigate the maze-like passages, potentially solve further puzzles (involving Pokémon like Klefki or Chandelure), and engage in battles.

Ultimately, your efforts will lead you to Gwynn, allowing you to continue with the main storyline, secure your promotion to Rank D, and unravel more of the secrets surrounding the magnificent, yet often dangerous, Lumiose City.

The Clawitzer Fountain is more than a landmark; it’s a testament to how even the most static parts of the world can be transformed by the power of a Pokémon—and the ingenuity of a researcher! Now go forth and conquer the depths!
